The SELB is a Licensing Organisation for schools and youth organisations operating the DofE Award across six Council areas. It provides assistance to these groups through
- - Sales of record books
- - Sales of support material
- - Advice and support
- - Training courses
- - Access to expedition assessment
The concept of the DofE is anyone aged between 14 and 24 can do a programme at one of three progressive levels which, when successfully completed, lead to a Bronze, Silver or Gold Duke of Edinburgh’s Award. There are four sections at Bronze and Silver level and five at Gold. Participants select and set their own overall time scales and programme objectives in each of the following areas :
Volunteering: undertaking service to individuals or the community
Physical: improving in an area of sport, dance or fitness activities
Skills: developing practical and social skills and personal interests
Expedition: planning, training for completion of an adventurous journey in the UK
At Gold level, participants must do an additional fifth residential section, which involves staying and working away from home doing a shared activity.
Each section must be done for a minimum period of time. It must be monitored and then assessed by someone with knowledge of that particular activity to achieve an Award.
Each progressive level demands more time and commitment from participants.
The DofE achieves its mission through personal development programmes and the assessment and presentation of Awards. Programmes are driven by ten guiding principles, which are at the heart of everything.

There are many rewards for young people who do DofE programmes and achieve an Award. Its balanced programme of activities develops the whole person – mind, body and soul, in an environment of social interaction and team working.
Furthermore, as doing their DofE involves developing a personal programme of challenging activities, participants enjoy unique experiences and rewards. DofE programmes are successful and effective methods for supporting the personal development of young people:
