SELB Build a School in Africa Campaign
By now everyone will be aware that the Southern Education and Library Board will become part of the new Education and Skills Authority (ESA) on April 1, 2009.
It has been a memorable journey from the inception of the Board back in 1973 and we can be justifiably proud of our achievements over the last 36 years.

 |
A number of staff have come together to consider what would be a suitable legacy to mark that achievement. Colleagues have agreed that voluntary fund raising of £36,000 (£1,000 for each year of existence of the SELB) to build and equip a school in Africa would be a fitting gesture, in that it will provide improved educational facilities for young people in poverty-stricken areas of Kenya or Uganda.

|
This would be delivered in partnership with ‘Build Africa’ a charity with a proven record in that field. Build Africa will identify a school that they will be working on during 2009 which can be the focus of our fundraising efforts. |
They will work very closely with all our campaign, help us with an array of fundraising advice and suggestions, provide us with resources and materials for events and presentations and provide feedback on ‘our’ school. Information on this charity can be found on the website. BUILD AFRICA WEBSITE

A steering group of volunteers representing all departments and all staff within the Board, has been formed to co-ordinate the fund raising. All SELB staff will be invited to help raise funds over the period from May 2008 to March 2009.
Both the Chief Executive and the Board are keen to support this campaign on the understanding that it is a voluntary activity, it does not interfere in any way with service delivery to our customers and the Board’s Audit Committee will oversee the controls in place to ensure that the Board’s good name is protected.
To simplify the process a range of fundraising options have been identified to provide opportunities for each and everyone of you to get involved as individuals or as groups. Although we are aware that many of you already contribute to other fundraising initiatives we would encourage you to take an interest in this SELB staff campaign and give consideration to the fundraising options which will be circulated in the coming weeks. The group has already come up with some suggestions and options tailored to suit all levels of commitment both financially and in terms of time and effort. We are confident that you can come up with many more!
Colleagues will be provided with regular updates on activities and progress through group emails and a dedicated section on the SELB website.
