PUPIL PARTICIPATION INCLUDING THE DEVELOPMENT OF SCHOOL COUNCILS

"The development of a culture where the views of children and young people are routinely sought in matters which impact on their lives" is an expressed aim of government (Our Children and Young People-Our Pledge), a ten-year strategy for children and young people (OFMDFM 2006) which is consistent with the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child.

The Pupil Personal Development Services Team actively encourages real and meaningful participation of all pupils in influencing decisions which affect them, including the practices and policies that operate within their schools. Recent legislation requires schools to consult with pupils and other key stakeholders, in relation to the development of Anti-Bullying Policies, in order to develop policies and procedures which will secure the ownership of a school community.

Class and school Councils give pupils a voice as partners in the processes of school improvement and self evaluation, helping schools to become more effective learning environments. The Pupil Personal Development Services Team will assist schools in developing skills and practices to enable children's views to be heard and encourage their role as active participants in their school communities. The PPDS team can provide advice and support through training for pupils and staff.
