While it is important to highlight that not all children are the same, a robust body of research has highlighted the poor outcomes in respect of Looked After Children. The reasons for this are many and complex. For some children it can be simply too difficult to concentrate on school while so much is happening or has happened in their lives.
There is now some experience which reinforces the importance of Looked After Children striving for educational achievement, and being challenged and supported to meet their full potential. The joined up services across education and health and social services at all levels will contribute to a greater understanding of the needs of Looked After Children and ultimately to their success.
“During these precious years as young people especially, we need stimulation and encouragement in order to maintain the drive to achieve something within ourselves. You can never do it on your own and you always need somebody standing behind you, supporting you and encouraging you to do better.”
(Marie, aged 17 living in residential care)
A document entitled Looked After Children & Education has been produced through a partnership between SELB, SHSSB and the three trusts in the Southern Board area. It offers practical information and guidance to all those involved in the educational support of our Looked After Children, including teachers, foster parents, social workers and other support personnel.
Relevant training to support school staff with responsibility for Looked After Children will be available shortly.
The Pupil Personal Development Services Team works in partnership with other lead agencies to help achieve improvement in outcomes for Looked After Children through involvement in Children Services Planning.
