How To Transfer Your Child From One School to Another

Primary and Post-Primary

If you wish to transfer your child from one school to another, for example, because you are moving house, you will need to make a formal application.  Complete Form AP1 Application for Admission to Primary/Post Primary School Other than Year 1 and Year 8 and submit it directly to the school you wish your child to be considered for.  Several forms may be completed for different schools at the same time.  The school will respond to you in writing when a decision has been made, normally within 10 working days.  There is no deadline for applications.


Please note that in Northern Ireland Compulsory School Age Children (for 2015/2016 School Year)  are those born between:

2 July 2004 and 1 July 2011           (primary age)

2 July 1999 and 1 July 2004           (post primary age)

Date of Birth by Year Group 2015-2016

You should note the arrangements for provision of Transport Assistance for Pupils attending Primary/Post Primary School when considering the school you wish your child to attend.  Details of current arrangements are available in the introduction of the parent information booklet.


Please note that separate arrangements exist for:

  • children transferring from Primary 7 in a primary school to Year 8 in a post primary school.   • pupils seeking admission to Year 11 in Senior High Schools in the Two-Tier System (sometimes known as the Dickson plan) 


If a school is full to capacity i.e. it has reached its enrolment number (the maximum number of pupils a school may have on its register at any time) it will be unable to admit your child. There is no right of appeal against this decision and you will need to apply to alternative school(s) until you find a school which can admit your child. 

A parent does have a right of appeal where a school has refused a child admission on the basis that it would be prejudicial to the efficient use of resources.  A challenge to a school’s decision in these cases is dealt with as a complaint under Article 101 of the Education and Libraries Order 1986.  If the school does not admit your child and you consider the school has not acted reasonably in refusing your child admission you can register a complaint by writing to: School Access Team, Department of Education, Rathgael House, Balloo Road, Rathgill, BANGOR, BT19 7PR.  Your letter must be received within 10 working days from the date of the school’s letter advising you of the decision.

Post Primary Schools Only

You can make an application to the Exceptional Circumstances Body (ECB) in situations where your child has not been admitted to the school you consider that, for compelling and exceptional reasons, he/she must attend. This facility is available only in respect of admissions to post-primary schools (Years 8 to 12). There is no deadline for applications to the ECB.

The arrangements set out above do not apply to children for whom the Education Authority holds a formal statement of Special Educational Needs.  You should contact the Education Authority Southern Region Special Education Section for advice on how to transfer your child by telephone on 028 3751 2522 or 028 3741 0139.
