The Worlds Biggest Lesson
Key Stage 3 Pupils of Lough Road Learning Centre took part in ‘The World’s Biggest Lesson’ to remind world leaders of their promise to get every child worldwide into school by 2015.

There are still 72 million children missing an education, with many millions more forced to drop out of school before they can complete even a primary education. This year the Global Campaign for Education (GCE), the world’s largest children’s campaign, asked schools in the UK to take part in the World’s Biggest Lesson on Wednesday April 23rd to remind world leaders of the children who miss out on education.

Lough Road Learning Centre was one of hundreds of schools around the UK who took part in The World’s Biggest Lesson as part of the Global Campaign for Education’sSend My Friend ’08 campaign. Key Stage 3 EOTAS pupils helped to get into the Guinness Book of Records on Wednesday 23 April when young people in 120 countries were taught the same ‘core lesson’ in two time zones. Gordon Brown, other MP’s and celebrities were also invited to attend the ‘World’s Biggest Lesson’ in one of their local schools.

Following TheWorld's biggest lesson MP’s David Simpson (Upper Bann) and Michelle Gildernew (Fermanagh and South Tyrone) joined Key Stage 3 Pupils and gotcreative by decorating a “missing out card”, representing the children who are missing out on education, with drawings and messages to world leaders about ending the global education crisis.

The pupils are helping raise awareness about the issue by creating a giant display in their school. The pupils invited local MPs to contribute to the display by creating a montage to show what they would have missed out on if they had not received an education and stating what they will personally be doing to help reach the education for all children target. MP Jeffrey Donaldson ( Lagan Valley) was unable to attend but did send in a completed Action Card.

The ‘missing out cards’ of MP’s Michelle Gildernew, Jeffrey Donaldson and David Simpson have now been included in the display along with those which Key Stage 1, 2 and 4 pupils also completed to support the campaign. Key Stage 3 pupils will meet with Catriona Ruane (Minister for Education) when they tour Government Buildings in Stormont on 16 th June 2008.

Lough Road Learning Centre Key Stage 3 Pupils will be photographing the display/ collapsing it and sending the individual cards to Gordon Brown before he flies off to the G8 in Japan where we hope that he will represent our views on the issue.

Owain James, International Co-ordinator for the Global Campaign for Education said:
Possibly one of the greatest injustices of all is that where we live and who we are makes all the difference to whether we get a quality education; 57% of children out of school are girls, 33% have a disability and 50% of children who don’t go to school live in war zones…Education is a human right and the quickest way out of poverty. We are now only 7 years from the target date for Education For All and unless the increase in education aid comes on stream in the next two years millions of children, often the most vulnerable, will continue to be denied the most basic of human rights.”
