SCHOOLS SINGING A SONG FOR PORTADOWN
Hart Memorial and Presentation primary schools have combined in a cross-community initiative to produce a ‘song for Portadown’.
The two local schools have been collaborating with each other for over a decade and their latest joint venture has come about under the Schools Community Relations Programme, with Jayne Simms of the Southern Education and Library Board acting as co-ordinator.

This year’s programme, formulated by teachers from the two schools, Mrs Catherine Davison and Mr Gareth Ryan, in conjunction with the SELB representative, focused on developing and showcasing the children’s creative talents.
After initial ice-breakers, the children selected one of three groups to work in – song, dance or information communications technology.
The ICT element involved taking digital photographs to record the creative process and turning them into short films.
Much of the work was done at the SELB’s AmmA Centre in Armagh and both schools acknowledge that it was the support and expertise which came through this source that enabled the project to be so successful.
The climax to the six-week collaboration on the project came with a performance in the Market Place Theatre in Armagh entitled ‘In the Town’ to which parents, family and friends were invited along with SELB officers, Department of Education representatives and members of the Inspectorate.
However, this was not the only outlet for the song, as Hart Principal Miss Julie Shipley explains.
“We felt that the song was so good and had so much meaning for Portadown, we wanted it to reach a wider audience.
“The Craigavon Mayor’s office was contacted and informed about the project and we asked if he would like a copy of the CD.
“Mayor Twyble not only happily accepted that offer but also invited all the children to come to the Civic Centre to perform the song for him personally.
“The two classes subsequently travelled to the Civic Centre and performed for the Mayor. Mr Twyble was clearly very interested in our project and impressed by the song.
“He enthusiastically accepted the CD and a copy of the lyrics before treating the children and adults present to snacks.
“After that, the Mayor took time out of his hectic schedule to give the children a guided tour of the Civic Centre, including the Council Chamber and his personal offices.
“All enjoyed a great morning out and were very grateful to the Mayor for his hospitality.”
Mr Ryan of Presentation also thanked the Mayor and paid tribute to the contribution of the SELB to this successful initiative.
He said: “This project gave the pupils a great opportunity to learn about history and develop a respect for diversity at a time when our society is becoming increasingly diverse.
“The Mayor took a real interest in what we have done and his words gave great encouragement to the young people. We also appreciated his kindness and hospitality during the visit when we were made to feel very welcome.”
On behalf of the SELB, Jayne Simms, Advisory Teacher for the Schools Community Relations Programme, said: “The Board is delighted that these two schools have benefited so much from the programme and I congratulate them on their efforts and creativity.
“Obviously we would encourage the schools to continue working together and further developing the strong bonds which have already been formed between them over a number of years.”
The song, simply titled ‘Portadown’, speaks of the town’s long and varied history, its standing as the ‘hub of the north’ and the third verse reflects recent demographic changes with the increase in the ethnic minority population locally.

CHORUS:

Portadown, Portadown

Singing in the dawn of a new day dancing

Portadown, Portadown

Won’t you come down to Portadown

1)

Portadown is a grand wee town

It’s had its ups and had its downs

Clan McCann on the Banks of the Bann

Called it Port an Dunain

1610 when the changes came

Someone’s loss is someone’s gain

People came from across the main

In search of better living

2)
The linen and the weaving came

A new canal and railway trains

The hub up in the north they say

Portadown is growing

In between the orange and green

Dream a different kind of dream

Fought about what might have been

But the river keeps on flowing

3)
Portadown is a grand wee town

Home to many nations now

Coming here to settle down

In search of better living

Time to make a brand new start

Light a candle in the dark

Presentation with the Hart (heart)

Portadown is singing
