This spectacular concert, held in the Ulster Hall, Belfast brought together no less than 300 musicians and showcased the extraordinary level of musical adeptness which has been achieved by all who were involved
The South Ulster Concert Band opened the show and under the baton of Mr. Luke Burke performed a varied programme of music including a selection from the Broadway classic ’Cats’ and John William’s ‘Star Wars’.

Then it was the turn of the Intermediate String Orchestra conducted by Teresa McArdle and Martina Masterson who presented a fabulous programme of music that really tested our young string players, including ‘The Girl from Ipanema’ and ‘An Irish Medley’. The South Ulster Youth Band under the direction of Darren Canmore, opened the second half with a wonderful Big Band and Blues Brothers selection followed by a near perfect performance of the fiendishly difficult ‘Festive Overture’ by Shostakovich’.

| The South Ulster Youth Orchestra continued the programme under their principal conductor and Head of Orchestras Bands and Ensembles, Seamus Dinsmore. Mussorgsky’s ‘Pictures at an Exhibition’ and Morricone’s ‘Gabriel’s Oboe’ were just thrilling. To add to this spectacular occasion, the Chamber Choir from The Royal School, Dungannon joined them for a moving performance of Jenkin’s stunningly beautiful ‘The Armed Man’
The finale saw the orchestra and bands unite for a resounding, uplifting and powerful performance of Hardiman’s ‘Lord of the Dance’ which was well deserving of the spontaneous standing ovation that they received.
Congratulations to all who were involved in making this a truly memorable night. . |
