Mayor of Armagh congratulates SELB's Mary McVeigh
On Wednesday 24th October a Civic Reception was hosted by Armagh City and District Council for the SELB Library Service in recognition of their successful participation in the British Library’s Turning the Pages competition.
In Spring 2007 the British Library, in collaboration with the Society of Chief Librarians, Scottish library chiefs and Microsoft, launched a spectacular competition to put treasures held in public libraries online.  Turning the Pages 2.0 is a remarkable 3-D system that allows people to explore digitised versions of the world's greatest books and manuscripts online.

The SELB entry was “An Hibernian Atlas”, published in 1798, which was a visual representation of pre-famine Ireland with maps of all the counties of Ireland and a beautiful example of Peter Bernard Scale's cartography, completed whilst working with his master John Rocque.  From 82 entries across the UK, 24 were been shortlisted, 5 of which were from NI with the prize being the digitisation of the applicant’s work.  The NI winner was BELB with SELB being the only NI highly commended shortlisted applicant.  As a result SELB is entitled to have parts of the Hibernian Atlas digitised at a reduced cost.
The Mayor of Armagh Cllr Charlie Rollston congratulates Mary McVeigh from the Irish and Local Studies Library on the receipt of the British Library Award in the Turning the pages competition.
