| TROCAIRE
Rosie Murray, Education Officer for Trocaire was invited to the Centre to talk to the pupils about their Global Gifts Campaign for Christmas. She stressed how important all of the gifts are to the people who receive them, saying that they could have a life changing impact on the people in poorer countries. After Rosie left we discussed all of the gifts and the group decided that we should aim to buy the most expensive gift of them all, a house in Burma. This would cost us £140. Everyone realised that this would be a big challenge but we decided to go for it! We drew out a grid with £200 squares and sold each square for £1. We contacted local business and asked them to donate prizes. We have to thank Tesco (Lurgan), Dunnes Stores, T Moore, Henderson’s Fruit Shop, The Wine Shop (Newry) and the Ashburn Hotel for supporting our venture and donating prizes. The mother of one of our pupils, Jason McEvoy sent in a tin of loose change that she had at home and when we counted it, there was approx £60 in it! She insisted that we go ahead and donate it to Trocaire. In the end we raised enough money to buy the house in Burma, a grain store for a family in South America and an olive tree for a family in Palestine! A fantastic result for everyone involved!!!! Total amount raised was £260. Well done everyone and in particular thanks to the McEvoy family in Newry.
RED NOSE DAY
The Comic Relief Red Nose Day took place on 16 th March. Key Stage 3 joined forces with Key Stage 4 and the Kinnego Centre to take part in a football tournament. A total of £92 was raised.
EASTER RAFFLE
At Easter we decided to have a raffle for an Easter egg and a Pogo Stick competition. Pupils and staff had to pay £1 for raffle tickets and £1 entry into the Pogo Stick Competition. This took place on 16 th April and was a great day’s crack! Robert Carlon won the Pogo Stick Competition with 189 consecutive bounces. Miss Regan from the Primary Dept won the Easter egg and Key Stage 3 won the Space Hopper race! We raised £135 which was donated to Cauldwell Children’s Charity which helps sick children. A big thanks to Mrs Blaney and Mrs Beattie who kindly lent us their pogo sticks.
SOUTHERN AREA HOSPICE
Our last fundraising event of the year will be a sponsored walk and will take place in early June. All proceeds from this event will go to Southern Area Hospice. If anyone would like to make a donation to this fundraising event, please contact Joan Ward at Lough Road Learning Centre on 028 3834 9421.
At the end of this school year, the pupils of Lough Road Learning Centre Key Stage 3 will have raised more than £500 for worthy causes. This is a tremendous achievement, given that we are such a small team! Well done to everyone who took part in all our events and who worked so hard to raise money.
