Pupils to benefit from High/Scope training
Twenty-nine teachers and classroom assistants from 10 primary schools in the Southern Education and Library Board (SELB) area have successfully completed a High/Scope course.  Those who completed the course were presented with their certificates by SELB Chief Executive Helen McClenaghan in Armagh Teachers’ Centre recently.
Maureen McConville of the SELB Literacy Team explained that the High/Scope approach places a strong emphasis on how children learn and on adult-child interactions which support the development of self-esteem, respect for others, reasoning and language skills.

Maureen, who is an endorsed High/Scope trainer, said: “The Curriculum Implementation course consisted of 10 days of workshops which were presented over the period of a year which enabled participants to gradually introduce the approach in their classrooms. The course included discussions, group activities, presentations, the completion of a range of assignments and a site visit.
“High/Scope teaches children to accept and understand differences in people, be open to others’ viewpoints and to be able to work independently as well as cooperate with others.”
High/Scope is an approach to early learning derived from developmental principles. Firmly rooted in practice, it has been researched, developed and shaped by new knowledge and understanding over a forty year period.
