| The conference, an annual event, offers participants the chance to come together with international peers to discuss issues relevant to young people today. The topics for the council to debate this year include Human Rights, Child Poverty, Millennium Goals, Healthcare, Conflict Resolution, International Terrorism and Cultural Awareness.
This year the SELB delegates representing the UK are Sarah Lavery (Brownlow Resource Centre, Craigavon), Paul Dinsmore, (St Colman’s College, Newry), Billie Phipps-Tyndall and Roisin Murphy (Sacred Heart Grammar School, Newry), Hassan Jaffar and Christopher Cullen (Royal School, Dungannon). The group has been meeting on a weekly basis over the past six weeks in preparation for the council and has been discussing Community Relations issues in Northern Ireland , including cultural diversity and traditions.
The group was facilitated by Ellen Donnelly, a student from the University of Ulster at Jordanstown Community Youth Work Course and a past participant of the United World Youth Council and David McCrory , SELB Youth Worker for Community Relations.
David McCrory said: “The United World Youth Council is a real opportunity for young people to meet and engage with their peers from throughout the world. Young people from each continent will be represented and each will bring their unique thoughts and views on world politics and social policy. Each year the SELB is invited to send a delegation to represent the UK and this year our delegation is tremendously excited by the opportunities this event holds.”
