| The ‘Diversity of Learning Needs: Education For All’ conference was held in Newcastle , County Down , over Wednesday, May 11 and Thursday, May 12.
The Southern Education and Library Board has been the lead partner among the five Education Boards participating in the North South Education Forum.
Caitríona Hughes, SELB International Officer and NSEF member, said the Forum had targeted those areas which have been most affected by the legacy of the conflict in Northern Ireland .
Ms Hughes said: “As a result of the reduction in political unrest, this project has enabled the education sector to build upon peace and help promote reconciliation on a cross-community and cross-border basis leading to a stable and more normal society.
“NSEF research highlighted the following areas of work: Youth Work in Northern Ireland and the Six Southern Irish border counties; Social Inclusion; Continuing Professional Development; Information and Communications Technology (ICT) in Education and Community; Links and Partnerships (arts).
“Reports have been produced on the first three areas and a DVD on Continuing Professional Development produced. A DVD on ICT in Education was launched at the conference and the arts project showcased 40 young people from schools from both sides of the border who performed an extract from their Dance/Drama project.
“A total of 78 teachers and officers also took part in individual cross-border study visits through the North South Education Forum; these showcased good practice in different areas of education.
