| Moygashel School is Best Kept |
|
| Teachers and pupils at Howard Primary School in Moygashel are celebrating after winning the top accolade in the SuperValu Best Kept School Awards 2005.
The Best Kept Awards are organised annually by the Northern Ireland Amenity Council (NIAC) and sponsored by independent supermarket group SuperValu. |
Almost two hundred schools from across Northern Ireland entered the prestigious SuperValu Best Kept School Awards scheme this year and NIAC judges have been scouring the country to find the tidiest and most environmentally active schools since March.

Howard Primary School was chosen by NIAC to receive the overall ‘Best of the Best’ title out of a shortlist of fifteen schools – winners in small, medium and large categories in each Board area. The overall award was presented to Howard Primary at an event in Armagh recently, hosted by the Southern Education and Library Board (SELB).

Howard was among six schools in the SELB area to pick up prizes in the Best Kept Awards. The six were: Craigavon Primary School , Gilford, and St Malachy's Primary School, Drummullan, Cookstown, winner and runner-up respectively in the Small School Category. Howard Primary School , Moygashel, Dungannon, was the winner in the Medium School Category in which St Ronan’s Primary School, Newry, was runner-up. Sacred Heart Grammar, Newry, and King’s Park Primary School , Lurgan, were winner and runner-up respectively in the Large School Category.

| Congratulating all the winners, Doreen Muskett, Chairman of NIAC said: “NIAC judges look for evidence of pupil participation in recycling and biodiversity projects, and of course clean and tidy school grounds. Howard Primary School and the other winning schools impressed the judges in all of these areas.”
Howard Primary has been awarded a monetary prize to help them promote their environmental endeavours and all category winners receive a personalized sign, a perpetual crystal trophy and a cash award. Runners up are recognised with a special certificate and a monetary donation.
Nicky Kelly, Brand Manager at Musgrave SuperValu-Centra NI added: “SuperValu is proud to be part of the Best Kept School Awards for the second year and we are delighted to see so many schools taking part.”
Principal of Howard Primary School , Valerie Campbell said: “To be named 'Best of the Best' in Northern Ireland is absolutely fantastic. It is recognition of the many months of hard work put in by pupils, staff and parents to develop and enhance our school grounds and to provide a stimulating and educational environment for pupils. We have had a lot of support from the Borough Council and the Southern Education and Library Board.
“Our school grounds have become an extension of our classrooms where we teach anti-litter habits, how to encourage, recognise and respect wild life, the value of reducing and reusing waste and hands-on experience of growing organic fruit and vegetables.”
Mrs Moira Alexander , SELB chairman, said the Board was pleased to host the presentation of the SuperValu Best Kept School Awards in its area. She added: “I congratulate Howard Primary and all the Southern Board winners and runners-up in the various categories. They have done their schools and the SELB proud.”
