Contribution of school governors praised by SELB
The Southern Education and Library Board (SELB) has expressed its appreciation of those who serve on the boards of governors of schools across the Board area. Plunkett Campbell (pictured), Chairperson of the Board’s Education Committee, said:
“In undertaking this community responsibility, governors give of their time voluntarily for the good of the education of our children and young people.“The Board wishes to express its thanks to these men and women who play a vital role in every community through their involvement with schools.

“A report published recently by the House of Commons Committee of Public Accounts recommended that governors need improved skills to carry out their duties effectively, particularly with regard to financial management. The Board acknowledges the recommendations in the ‘Local Management of Schools’ report, particularly the need for more focussed training, additional support and greater clarification of the role of governors.
“Governors, principals, teachers and the SELB share the view of the Committee of Public Accounts that public money invested in education should be spent wisely.
“Governors who have been serving on school boards for a number of years have met many challenges in an education system which has undergone major changes. Those people continuing to serve on school boards or who have taken up the role for the first time will be faced with further challenges as they give of their time for the younger generation.
“Mindful of the valuable public service governors perform, the Board expresses its gratitude to those carrying out this voluntary role.”
