Fun day for official opening of Churchill Primary School extension

Pupils at Churchill Primary School in Caledon , County Tyrone , had a fun day on Tuesday, June 28, to mark the official opening of a £300,000 scheme carried out by the Southern Education and Library Board (SELB) at the school. SELB Chairman Moira Alexander officially declared the extension open during the fun day at the 60-pupil school.
The project on the listed building dating from 1852 was part of an SELB programme of works aimed at improving facilities at small rural schools and was funded under the Reinvestment and Reform Initiative.

Mrs Alexander was welcomed to the school by principal Phyllis McWilliams. Mrs Alexander said: “It is pleasing to see these new facilities at Churchill Primary School especially the new hall which the pupils will be able to use for a range of activities. “I wish the principal, Mrs McWilliams her colleagues and all the pupils well as they benefit from this enhanced learning environment.”The principal Mrs McWilliams said the governors, staff and pupils were delighted to be marking the opening of the extension to the school.
Mrs McWilliams said: “This project not only provided us with superb new facilities, but it also added the extra interest and excitement of an archaeological dig – what an experience for us all!
“This extension enhances the educational environment enabling us to provide the high standard of education which our pupils richly deserve.
“The fabulous sports hall has already increased the learning experiences of our pupils and given them opportunities which we would never have imagined. We have an extensive range of gym equipment and teachers are now able to deliver a full and beneficial PE Programme. Our hall has provided the perfect venue for various curriculum activities for example we had a workshop earlier this year, where pupils worked with musicians from the Ulster Orchestra.
“Our brightly coloured library facilities are so appealing that all our pupils are now regular visitors to it. Not to forget the school staff who have a lovely new staffroom and a bright new school office.
“I would like to pay tribute to the SELB and those who were responsible for this imaginative scheme, including the SELB architect Mr Ronnie Gregg , Hegarty Architects, the Conservation Architects and the contractors O’Hanlon Brothers for the quality and design of the building. The completed works complement the existing school building, constructed more than 150 years ago, in scale and material.
“I would like to pay tribute to the work of all the staff who cleaned and organised the building so pupils were able to have a smooth transition into it and to the governors who work on behalf of the pupils and staff.
“We all have a tremendous sense of pride in our new facilities and we are assured that we can now offer a high quality of education for the pupils entrusted to our care.”
