SELB elects new chairperson
The Southern Education and Library Board (SELB) has elected a former primary school principal as its new chairperson. At the first meeting of the new Board on Thursday, July 28, Mrs Marie Donnell BEd MA(Ed) was unanimously elected to the position.
The members also unanimously supported the re-election of Reverend Martin McVeigh as vice-chairperson of the Board. Mrs Donnell and Fr McVeigh will serve in the positions for two years. Accepting the post, Mrs Donnell said: “I am grateful to fellow Board members for placing their confidence in me by electing me to this position.

“I shall do my best to meet the high standards set by the previous chairperson Mrs Moira Alexander. With the support of the vice-chairperson Fr McVeigh and the chief executive Mrs Helen McClenaghan , I am looking forward to continuing the work of the SELB to ensure that high quality education, youth, library and support services are delivered throughout the Board area.”

From 1969 until her retirement in 2001, Mrs Donnell was principal of St James’s Primary School – a controlled school near Hillsborough which was later amalgamated with two other schools to form Meadow Bridge Primary School .

Mrs Donnell and her husband Tom live in Lurgan. The couple have one daughter and one son and a year-old granddaughter.

The new chairperson is serving for a second term as a member of the SELB. The re-elected vice-chairperson, Fr McVeigh, is also serving his second term on the Board. He is parish priest of Pomeroy.

Fr McVeigh said: “I am looking forward to working with Mrs Donnell and to serving the community in the SELB area.”
