A Lurgan man has cooked his way to a place in the Northern Ireland final of a competition which allows school cooks to show their culinary skills.

At the regional heat held in the East Tyrone College of Further Education’s Dungannon Campus, David produced a two course meal for four people in 90 minutes, following strict nutritional guidelines with a limited spend of £1.60 per person.
David’s main course was lamb curry in a filo basket with pilaf rice and for dessert he served up baked bramley apple with summer berries and Greek yoghurt.
Congratulating David on his success, SELB Catering Manager Doris Young wished him every success in the Northern Ireland final next month. The Catering Manager paid tribute to all those who entered the SELB heat.
Mrs Young said: “You are great ambassadors for the SELB Catering Service and I am very impressed with the skills which have been displayed.”
This is the third successive year for the Schools Salon Culinaire competition, which is sponsored by the Livestock and Meat Commission for Northern Ireland (LMC).
Judges of the SELB heat were Dr Geraldine Cuskelly of the LMC, and Janet McAllister, Chairperson of Northern Ireland School Caterers’ Association and Catering Manager for the Belfast Education and Library Board.
They both commented on the difficult task they had in selecting a winner, such was the high quality of the entries.
