SELB – developing play skills in children with autism.
The Southern Education and Library Board (SELB) has organised autism specific play skills training for parents, teachers and classroom assistants from across the six district councils of the Board area.
A spokesperson for the SELB said: “This play skills course was designed to promote the social and language skills of children in the early years who have an autistic spectrum disorder. It should also facilitate the development of positive play experiences to enhance the young child’s repertoire of skills.

This represents part of an ongoing programme of early years training and support for parents and professionals in the SELB area.
“The course was delivered by Diana Seach, and was hosted by Sperrinview School, Dungannon, on Monday, June 21, and Tuesday, June 22. A total of 60 places were offered on the training courses.
“Among the areas explored was why play is important for children with autism, how to focus on the child’s interests and join in with his or her play.
“Course participants also looked at how to create an environment which motivates the child to initiate interaction.”
