SELB spokesperson said: “This is the second year that
the Department of Education has made additional funding available
to the Youth Service for this summer programme aimed at young
people in interface areas and those areas most affected by
the Troubles.
“Last summer 2,957 young people took part in a total
of 55 schemes across the SELB area. In Craigavon/Banbridge
division the average length of programmes was two weeks, in
Newry and Mourne and Armagh it was three weeks and in Cookstown/Dungannon
it was an average of four weeks.
“While 43 schemes were delivered by voluntary and statutory
registered youth organisations, 12 were delivered by community
groups, for example, community associations, church groups
and sports clubs.
“The Youth Service was delighted with the uptake of
the funding last year and hopes there will be the same interest
for this summer’s programme.
“Proposed schemes must cater for young people within
the 4 to 25 age range and should lead to their personal and
social development. The main focus of the programmes should
be timetabled in July and August.
“A grant of up to a maximum of £2500 will be available
for work in specific programmes to cover costs for leaders,
transport, equipment/materials, entrance fees, residentials,
use of community centres, training and evaluation.
“Organisations are encouraged to forward their application
as soon as possible. For further information contact the relevant
divisional youth office on: Armagh – 028 3752 8681;
