Bus drivers boost Hospice coffers
SOUTHERN Education and Library Board bus drivers and other members of the Board’s Transport Section have joined their colleague John Dalzell MBE in raising more than £15,000 for the Southern Area Hospice based in Newry.
A total of 32 Transport Section staff members helped Newry bus driver and well-known Hospice fundraiser John raise £63,700 overall in the run up to Christmas as part of his annual ‘sit-out’.

John’s colleagues collected £15,345 at the Quays Shopping Centre in the week up to Christmas Eve.

An SELB spokesperson said: “Transport Section staff came from various areas of the Board including Banbridge, Castlewellan, Kilkeel and Armagh, as well as Newry, to provide a two hour collecting stint each.
“This is the third year that Transport staff have helped John and the money raised has increased significantly each year with £40,000 being collected over the three years.”
John Dalzell said he appreciated the support of his work colleagues in the fundraising effort.

John said: “I am grateful to senior drivers Felim Lally and Nigel Stewart for their help in organising collectors and for all the Transport Section staff who collected. I also thank the public who have again shown their generosity for the work of the Southern Area Hospice.”

SELB chief executive Mrs Helen McClenaghan said: “I congratulate all the Transport Section staff who volunteered to give up their time to collect money for the Southern Area Hospice. It is heartening to see so many of John Dalzell’s colleagues helping him in this charity venture.”

Edel Rogan, Southern Area Hospice Fundraising Manager said: “We greatly appreciate all the hard work and commitment SELB staff put into John Dalzell’s sit out.

“The money raised will help us to continue providing Hospice Services to people affected by cancer and other terminal illnesses across the Southern Health Board area.”.
