SELB Chairman Mrs Moira Alexander congratulated the schools when they attended a presentation ceremony in the Boardroom at the Armagh headquarters on Wednesday, June 23. The Best Kept Awards are organised annually by the Northern Ireland Amenity Council (NIAC) and are sponsored by independent supermarket group SuperValu. Almost two hundred schools from across Northern Ireland entered the prestigious Awards scheme this year - 43 from the SELB area - and NIAC judges have been scouring the country to find the tidiest and most environmentally active schools since March.

Doreen Muskett, Chairman of NIAC congratulated the SELB winners; “We were delighted with the number of entries to the 2004 Awards and as usual the standard has been extremely high.
“The object of the Awards is to encourage young people to develop an interest in their school environment and the environment as a whole. Judging focuses on the traditional criteria of tidiness and cleanliness, but there is now a greater emphasis on pupil participation, recycling and biodiversity projects.
“The winners and runners up impressed the judges with their commitment in all of these areas.”

Winning schools each received a personalized sign, a perpetual crystal trophy and a cash award. Runners up received a special certificate and a monetary award.
Nicky Kelly, Brand Manager at Musgrave SuperValu-Centra NI added; “SuperValu is proud to be part of the Best Kept School Awards and we would commend all the schools that took part this year. It’s great to see the work being done by teachers and pupils in the Southern Education and Library Board in the care of school grounds and the environment.”
Mrs Moira Alexander, SELB chairman, said the Board was pleased to host the presentation of the SuperValu Best Kept School Awards in its area. Mrs Alexander said: “It is encouraging to see that the pupils and all the staff at these schools have taken a keen interest in their surroundings. It is important for people to be proud of their school and the involvement of pupils in keeping their environment tidy has a positive effect in the wider community, fostering concern for environmental issues generally.
“I congratulate the award winners and runners-up in the various categories. They have done their schools and the SELB proud.”
