SELB appoints new Head of Educational Services
The Southern Education & Library Board (SELB) has appointed Walter Burke to the position of Head of Educational Services. In his new post as part of the senior management team, Walter will be responsible for leading, managing and developing the Board's Education Department.
Mr Burke joined the Southern Education & Library Board in 1987 as an Adviser for Information Technology (IT). With colleagues he was responsible for the development of the Board's Technology Centre in Portadown and initiated a wide range of training programmes in Information and Communications Technology. During his 10 years as Adviser he presented papers on Information Technology to International Conferences in Europe, Australia and the United States. In 1996 he was awarded the Master of Business Administration Degree by the Open University.

Walter was promoted to Assistant Senior Education Officer in 1998 with responsibility for a wide range of services for children and young people.

On accepting his new appointment as Head of Educational Services, Walter commented, "My vision for education is that it will become a creative activity, providing young and old with enjoyment, stimulation, therapy and empowerment. I would like to see less emphasis on academic achievement and more on opportunities for all people to explore and express their emotions, feelings and talents in positive and constructive ways."

The SELB Education Department provides a wide range of services to schools in the southern board area including Curriculum Advisory & Support, Psychology and Welfare Services. The Department is also concerned with a wide range of provision for youth and supports initiatives such as Physical Education and Sport, local and international activities.
