on the first edition of Southern Outlook, Cathy said, "This
magazine has been designed with our customers in mind, it
will be distributed to southern board schools, libraries,
out centres, youth clubs and other educational partners. It
will be produced three times a year. The purpose is to share
information about the range of SELB services and also to highlight
the good work that goes on both inside and outside school
gates. Being at Dungannon PS today gives me the opportunity
to see first hand, those participating in the Enriched Curriculum
pilot scheme. The experiences and successes felt here are
ideal for inclusion in the next magazine."
The Enriched Curriculum project advocates a later start to
formal reading and writing and allows young children time
to develop social skills and greater self-confidence. Teacher
of the Learning Support Class Mrs Winnifred Thompson commented
"I am delighted at the progress of the children in my
class, the new programme is ideally suited to their needs.
It gives the boys and girls the opportunity to develop social
skills and be self motivated to learn new things. I believe
this approach is a positive step forward for all early years
children." To date Dungannon PS is the only special needs
unit taking part in the pilot scheme within Northern Ireland.
Other primary schools in the Southern Board area taking part
in the pilot include Portadown Integrated, St Patrick's Aughacommon,
St Teresa's Lurgan and Lurgan Model. . |
