New Special School in Banbridge
Monday 8th April 2002 marked an important date in the calendar for pupils at the new Donard special school in Banbridge, as they started the school day in a brand new school.
The school costing £2million and designed by the Southern Education and Library Board (SELB) Architectural and Property Service department took 14 months to complete. The building comprises 7 classrooms, a multipurpose hall, home teach unit, dining area, soft play and sensory rooms and separate rooms for speech, physio and occupational therapists.

It is one of 5 special schools in the Southern Board area, symbolising the continued dedication and commitment the SELB have to providing education for children with special needs.

The new building is modern and up to date. The SELB architects in design and construction have utilised bright colours (blues, greens and yellows). There is also a safe play area in a u shaped courtyard, which is directly connected to all the classrooms.

SELB Chief Executive Helen McClenaghan went along yesterday morning to welcome the children to their new school; she said " I wanted to see the delight on the children's faces when they entered their new school for the first time. This school is a symbol of the Southern Board's continued commitment to children with special education needs and I congratulate Mrs Wylie and her staff for their support and enthusiasm to date.".
