Consessionary Transport
Following representations received from parents and pubic representatives, the Southern Education and Library Board at its meeting on Thursday 25 July, agreed that the decision to withdraw concessionary transport provided by private operators with effect from September 2002 should be rescinded and that the existing concessionary arrangements should continue during the forthcoming academic year.
SELB Chief Executive Helen McClenaghan commented, "I am pleased to confirm that the concessionary transport arrangements for those children affected by the earlier decision will be reinstated with effect from 2 September 2002 and will continue until 30 June 2003, provided that the seat is not required for a pupil for whom the Board is required to make available transport assistance.

During this period, the Board, as part of the ongoing review of the transport service, will seek and consider the views of, amongst others, parents whose children are in receipt of concessionary transport before making any decisions with regard future provision."

Letters are currently being sent out to all those parents directly affected, to inform them of the decision.Mrs McClenaghan added, "The potential savings of £108,000 which was to be saved in the year 2002/03 as a result of the earlier decision will still have to be found from a number of measures that will not directly affect schools."
