On Tuesday 19th March the Southern Education & Library Board (SELB) will play host to 75 teachers and 75 classroom assistants for a day of training in special educational needs.
The SELB Special Education department has arranged a 1-day training course entitled "The Effective Use of Classroom Assistants in the area of Special Education". The course open to both teachers and classroom assistants will address issues and combine experiences from primary and post primary sectors.

The training event to be held at Tullylagan Country House Hotel in Cookstown will focus on the effective use of classroom assistants in special education and delegates will have the opportunity to attend 3 out of 5 workshops addressing issues such as Supporting Pupils with Hearing Impairments or Visual Impairments, pupils with Autistic Spectrum Disorder or Specific Learning Difficulties and those with Speech and Language Impairments.

Hazel Mullan, SELB Principal Educational Psychologist and Advisor for Special Needs commented "This is the first time the SELB have played host to such training for classroom assistants in the area of Special Education. We have had a great response from schools wishing to attend and all available places were filled in a short space of time. I am looking forward to an informative and full day of activity, discussion and feedback." She added "This is first step in an continued training programme within this area for the SELB and I am positive delegates will find it a rewarding and useful experience."
