Alexander, who shortly retires as Principal of Fairhill PS
Kinallen, has served as a member of the Board for the last
8 years. She has comprehensive experience of teaching and
addressing the needs of young people. Only a matter of weeks
ago at the Teaching Awards ceremony held at the Waterfront
in Belfast, she received a special commendation in the Leadership
Trust Award for School Leadership.
On accepting the post of Chairman, Mrs Alexander said "I
feel honoured to be taking up such a position with the Southern
Board. I am delighted to have been selected by my fellow board
members to be Chairman. It is the children and young people
who are at the centre of the education system and it has always
been my commitment to place their needs first and foremost.
It is my aim to continue to work on the Board to provide a
high quality service for our customers and address their needs
in a positive way."
Father McVeigh from Pomeroy said he was delighted at being
elected vice chairman and he intended to give his firm support
to the Board.
The Southern Board also has 14 new members. Board membership
is intended to represent the whole community and therefore
the Board is made up of councillors of the 6 local authorities,
transferors of controlled schools, trustees of catholic maintained
schools, serving teachers and persons appointed specifically
by the Minister of Education because of their interest in
the provision of board services.
The new Board under the direction of Chairman Moira Alexander
and Chief Executive Helen McClenaghan are looking to the future
with continued enthusiasm. Through visiting the schools, youth
provision, libraries and other facilities on a regular basis,
they intend to strengthen relationships between the Board
and those it serves.. |
