Secretary of State opens Ceara School , Lurgan
Secretary of State, Dr John Reid today officially opened Ceara School in Lurgan. Previously known as Ceara Special School, the school costing £3 million caters for 72 children from age 3 to 19, all of who have severe learning difficulties.
Children and staff were delighted to greet the Secretary of State and welcomed him to their new school in a truly Christmas fashion, by singing a selection of carols. John Tremer, Chair of Governors and the Mayor of Craigavon, Alderman Samuel Gardiner, also welcomed Dr John Reid to Ceara.
 

Danielle Bambrick and Helen McCluskey, two of the schools young students assisted the Secretary of State with his official duty of declaring Ceara ‘officially open’.

Dr Peter Cunningham, Principal of Ceara, after thanking the Secretary of State for attending, paid tribute to all those who had worked tirelessly in the campaign for a new school over many years. He said "I wish to pay the fullest tribute to my staff for their professionalism, enthusiasm, dedication and empathy for our children – it has known no bounds." He added thanks to "the Southern Education & Library Board for their foresight and vision in providing excellent facilities for children who have severe learning difficulties".

Moira Alexander, Chairperson of the SELB spoke of her delight at being involved in such an event and also offered her congratulations to principal Peter Cunningham and staff. She commented: "Today is an exciting day for all those gathered together for the official opening of Ceara. I am delighted to join with the children, parents, staff and colleagues in celebrating on this joyous occasion", she added to the children, "you are all very special to all of us and I am proud of you today, as are your parents and teachers and bring all the best wishes of the Southern Board to all of you in your new school."

After the official ceremony, guests were then invited to tour the school and visit classrooms to talk to the children and teachers first hand about their personal experiences of moving to the new school.
