New Songs of Ulster - CD
Three years ago, two primary schools in Dungannon, County Tyrone came together as part of the “PATHWAYS” project, funded by the EU Peace Programme and administered and supported by the Southern Education & Library Board.
The pupils of Dungannon County PS and St Patrick’s PS, Dungannon actively researched and collected stories about the unique history and character of their own town. By talking to grandparents, teachers and relatives alike the children gained an insight in to what it was like years ago.  At this point well-known singer and songwriter Tommy Sands joined the project and assisted the pupils in creating their own song “Dungannon”.

This relatively simple idea was repeated in ten more schools over the following three years.  The schools were paired on a cross-community basis, therefore widening the range of memories and personal history utilised in the compilation of the songs.  Five more original songs were created:

“Trew and Moy” by Killyman & Laghey PS
“Welcome to Newry” by Newry High School and St Paul’s High School, Bessbrook
“From Sweet Ballygawley to Aughnacloy” by St Ciaran’s HS Ballygawley and Aughnacloy High School
“Castlecaulfied” by Walker Memorial PS and Castlecaulfield PS
“The Silent Valley Dam” by Annalong PS and Moneydarragh PS

Kenneth Tyndall, co-ordinator for the Pathways project, said, “All the pupils involved have shown great enthusiasm for the project and the launch of the CD is a wonderful example of the immense time and effort spent on this project.  I pass on my appreciation to the children, their families, teachers and Tommy Sands for being involved in such a wonderful project and will be delighted to see this CD on the stands for sale”.

The CD “New Songs of Ulster” was produced by Tom Newman (Co-founder of Virgin Records) and Mike Oldfield (Producer of Tubular Bells).   .
