Taking Maths to New Heights
The Southern Education & Library Board (SELB) recently hosted the local round of the Mathématiques Sans Frontières Competition. Now in its fourth year, this international mathematics competition is enjoyed by tens of thousands of pupils throughout the European Community with some 1800 pupils throughout Northern Ireland taking part last year.
This year in the SELB area, first prizes went to Banbridge Academy and St Joseph’s Grammar School Donaghmore in the Intermediate and Advanced sections respectively. They now go forward to the regional finals to be held in Belfast.

SELB Adviser for Mathematics, Esther Ross commented, “This competition is aimed at providing an opportunity for pupils to compete in teams in something stimulating and relevant to the educational curriculum, in particular helping develop problem-solving skills. Mathématiques Sans Frontières’ is a whole class group endeavour.”

A selection of fifth form (year 12) and lower sixth pupils (year 13) from six post primary schools in the board’s area attended the presentation event held at SELB Headquarters in Armagh, where prizes were awarded for First place, Second place and Highly Commended.
