Assistant Advisory Officer for Careers and Vocational Education,
Aidan McCormick is extremely enthusiastic about the event,
he said, “I am delighted that we could facilitate this
event by bringing together over 32 exhibitors from all over
Northern Ireland. To make the day as informative and more
importantly, as interactive as possible, we had organisations
demonstrating screen printing, baking, joinery, building,
horticulture, tile manufacture, administrative activites and
Call Centre simulations to name but a few.” Aidan continued,
“As educators and members of the business community
we have an obligation to empower all our young people to make
appropriate decisions with growing confidence. This event
is an attempt to provide quality learning opportunities and
experiences to facilitate their developing independence. The
day was all about facilitating the specific learning needs
and aspirations of our young people; to help them discover
new and interesting areas of potential employment and help
broaden their horizons.”
Laura McConville, Teacher of the Leavers Class at Ceara School
in Lurgan attended the conference with some of her young students
and believes it is an exciting step forward. She said, “The
young people in my class were really excited about attending
the conference. It is a real opportunity for them to get ‘hands
on’ experience which in turn might ignite a spark of
interest in their future career.”
Southern Area Development Manager for NIBEP, Clare McCartan
is proud that NIBEP are an active partner in organising such
an event, she said, “The young people that attended
obtained a first hand view of the types of skills that are
required out in the work place by many local business organisations
in Northern Ireland. It is also useful for teachers to be
able to network with these organisations and build up contacts.
We are very gratefull to all of the participating organisations
for their wholehearted support of this unique event.”
This is the first careers information conference of its kind
in the Southern Board area and it is hoped it will continue
as a regular event.
