First Sod cut for new Nursery School in Tandragee
Pre-school children in Tandragee and the surrounding area are to benefit from a new £350,000 nursery school; the occasion was marked by the first sod of the site being cut today, Tuesday 14 January 2003.
Southern Education & Library Board (SELB) Chairman, Mrs Moira Alexander invited the Mayor of Armagh City and District Council, Councillor Anna Brolly to cut the first sod. Mrs Alexander also extended a warm welcome to guests including SELB colleagues, local councillors, teachers and pupils from St James PS and Tandragee PS and members of the local community. Mrs Alexander expressed her joy at being involved on such an occasion; she said “I am proud to welcome everyone here today to celebrate the beginning of work on a wonderful facility for young children in the area.”

Situated close to the town centre and Recreation Centre in Tandragee, the double unit nursery will have 78 available places (52 part time and 26 full time) and is due to be operational for the 2003/04 school year. The total cost is in the region of £350,000. Work started on site in November 2002. The new school will be easily accessible by road and have fully equipped internal and external play areas. Staffing arrangements for the school will consist of 1 Principal, 1 Assistant Teacher and 2 Classroom Assistants.

The Mayor, Councillor Brolly commented, “On behalf of the Council I welcome this development in education and nursery provision in Tandragee in the form of a state-of-the-art school development for the local community. This project has been a long time in the planning and has involved close working between the Council and the SELB. It is a tremendous boost for the area to see further substantial public sector investment such as this and it clearly demonstrates the confidence that the Council and the SELB have in the growth of Tandragee.”

Children from St James Primary School Tandragee and Tandragee Primary School presented Mrs Alexander and the Mayor with a basket of flowers each to mark the occasion.

Helen McClenaghan SELB Chief Executive made the concluding remarks, she said, “The Nursery School will add to the already high quality education provision in Tandragee and we hope to continue to work in partnership with existing pre-school providers in the area. Finally, I would thank everyone for coming here today and look forward to the day when the children come through the doors of the new school building for the first time.”

Tandragee Nursery School is a successful outcome of the SELB’s Pre-School Education Expansion Programme. The main objective of this programme is that a preschool education place is provided for every child whose parents want a place, in the child’s final year of pre-compulsory education.

The main contractor on site is local contractor JJ Rice & Co, Armagh.
