SELB delighted to get ‘green light for go’ on Cookstown Library
SELB Chief Executive Helen McClenaghan is delighted that the proposed joint project for a new Town library and Further Education facilities in Cookstown has finally received ‘the green light for go’ on funding.
The Department for Employment and Learning (DEL) has just announced the approval and necessary funding for the FE college element of the project and as funding for the Library had already been secured from the Department of Culture, Arts and Leisure, plans can now begin for the work to start.

Mrs McClenaghan commented, “This exciting project for purpose built combined Library and Further Education facilities at Burn Road, Cookstown will be of great benefit to the local community. This truly is a unique project as it is the first joint provision between the Library service of an education & library board and an FE college in Northern Ireland. This development will continue to build on the excellent working relationships the southern board has always enjoyed with East Tyrone College of Further and Higher Education.

“The new development on the Burn Road will greatly enhance both library and FE provision for local residents in Cookstown and the surrounding areas and the southern board are delighted to be part of the scheme.”

In particular the new library will be a state of the art facility comprising of reference library space, access to the Internet under the People’s Network programme and a multi-purpose room available for public use such as local meetings. Shared facilities for both library users and students include a snack bar area.

Building work is due to start in approximately one year with anticipated completion date of July 2005. The total cost of the combined project is in the region of £2million.
