You will find us situated in idyllic surroundings, 2km from Rostrevor, on the northern shore of Carlingford Lough and the southern slope of the Mournes. We have a very modern, well equipped center providing all specialist equipment and high standard, fully catered, residential accommodation for 48 students and up to 8 accompanying staff students in 2 and 4 berth rooms. All our staff are friendly. Our instructors are qualified professionals who endeavour to ensure students enjoy their activities in the safest possible way.

All staff are friendly, qualified and professional instructors
All staff are friendly, qualified and professional instructors and strict safety guidelines are operated to ensure students enjoy their activities in the safest possible way.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURE ACTIVITIES comprise the majority of programmes delivered to schools and youth organisations throughout the year. Although 3-day, 4-day & weekend residentials for groups take up most of the calendar, we also run a residential summer scheme for young people who may or may not be part of a formal group.

FIELD STUDIES are a service we provide to schools, colleges and 3 rd level institutions. This traditional name now covers all aspects of environmental education including biology, geography, ecology, earth science & a mixture of all. Most groups attend for a single day although there are a limited number of field study residentials available each term.

MULTIACTIVITY
courses are the mainstay of the residential visits to Killowen. These consist of an assortment of activities designed to provide a range of adventurous experiences to challenge any age group and ability range. They provide an excellent environment to enhance the social and personal development of all participants. We also offer courses tailored on Developing Skills and on Leadership in outdoor activities.

DEVELOPING SKILLS

CANOEING, SAILING AND CLIMBING are activities particularly suited to further involvement and skill development. Within the SUMMER SCHEME (112kb pdf) we offer courses with a specialist programme aiming to provide participants with opportunities to increase their skills and practice in their chosen activity. These usually lead to a ELB or NGB recognised qualification. There are courses to suit complete beginners as well as those with some experience.

We may be able to accommodate whole or part groups (>10 students) who wish to focus on one of the above activities during their stay or who wish to build on skills from a previous course with a more focused re-visit to our centres.

LEADERSHIP
We offer Education Library Board and National Governing Bodies recognised leadership courses in adventure activities such as canoeing, sailing, hill-walking, climbing and wildways. These are available to youth workers, teachers and outdoor education instructors. At the moment these are time-tabled on a 3 year rotation.

VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTORS
Each year we invite suitably experienced young sailors to work as VI’s during the summer scheme at Killowen. They play an integral part in coaching the young people on the sailing courses and as such develop their own personal and instructional skills. This may lead to the RYA/ ELB instructor award.
