Developing Skills
CANOEING, SAILING AND CLIMBING are activities particularly suited to further involvement and skill development. Within the Summer Scheme we offer courses with a specialist programme aiming to provide participants with opportunities to increase their skills and practice in their chosen activity. These usually lead to a ELB or NGB recognised qualification. There are courses to suit complete beginners as well as those with some experience.
We may be able to accommodate whole or part groups (>10 students) who wish to focus on one of the above activities during their stay or who wish to build on skills from a previous course with a more focused re-visit to our centres.
LEADERSHIP
We offer Education Library Board and National Governing Bodies recognised leadership courses in adventure activities such as canoeing, sailing, hill-walking, climbing and wildways. These are available to youth workers, teachers and outdoor education instructors. At the moment these are time-tabled on a 3 year rotation.
VOLUNTEER INSTRUCTORS
Each year we invite suitably experienced young sailors to work as VI’s during the summer scheme at Killowen. They play an integral part in coaching the young people on the sailing courses and as such develop their own personal and instructional skills. This may lead to the RYA/ ELB instructor award.
