Library
services for housebound people, hospital patients, homes, day
centres and people with physical disabilities.
The
Special Services Section of the Southern Education and Library
Board's library service is responsible for services to:
HOUSEBOUND
PEOPLE
People
who for reasons of age, illness or disability are unable to
visit a library service point may request the Housebound Mobile
to call at their homes once every three weeks. If the recipient
is unable to go on the Mobile to choose, the library officer
will carry a selection of material into the home.

do I get the service?

What
happens next?
When you apply the librarian will arrange to visit you to discuss
whether you are eligible to receive the service.
How
soon will I get the service?
We try to provide the service as soon as possible.
How
will I know when the housebound mobile is to come to me?
We will tell you the date of the first visit and the approximate
time.
How
much will it cost?
The service is free.
How
many items can I borrow?
There is no limit.
How
often does the housebound mobile van call?
The van calls every three weeks.
Do
I select my own books from the van?
Yes, if you prefer to. If you require assistance the library
officer will help. However, if you do not wish to or can not
go on the van, the library officer will carry a selection of
books to you and you may choose.
Can
I reserve a book?
Yes, the Housebound Library Service provides a free reservation
service.
What
else does the service provide?
Music cassettes and videos are also available.
If you have any query or problem, we will try to supply that
information or put you in touch with an agency that can help
you. Just mention it to the library officer.
What
if I can not see very well?
We have a wide selection of large print books and we also provide
talking books.
What
do I do if I move into residential/sheltered housing?
Many care establishments in the Southern Education and Library
Board’s area receive a library service. Please ask the
Manager or Supervisor about this service.
HOSPlTAL
PATIENTS
People
who are in hospital are provided with a library service by the
Librarian and by volunteers who undertake a regular library
trolley ward round. The Librarian exchanges collections of books,
cassettes, videos as required.
DAY
CARE RESIDENTIAL AND SHELTERED UNITS
These
centres receive tailored book loan collections which are exchanged
regularly.
Music, spoken word and video cassettes are supplied if requested.
Material is also supplied to support activities going on in
a centre eg. books and packs for reminiscence therapy.
VISUAL
IMPAIRMENT
Large
Print Books - A range of large print books is available
in all libraries, hospitals, centres and mobile vans.
Music
Cassettes - All branch and mobile libraries have collections
of music cassettes which include country, classical, light instrumental,
pop, gospel and nostalgia.
Spoken
Word Cassettes - A range of fiction and non fiction may
be borrowed from the housebound mobile vans.
Royal
National 1nstitute For The Blind's Talking Book Service - The
Special Services Section will arrange membership of the RNIB's
Talking Book Service for those who are eligible. Members get
their own CD player and catalogues of all the titles available.
This is postal service and the library makes no charge.
Talking
Newspapers - Talking newspapers, prepared by volunteers
and containing local news, are available to people with visual
impairment. They are recorded on cassettes and posted free of
charge to listeners throughout the SELB area each week.
PHYSICAL
DISABILITY
Talking
Book Service - A Talking Book Service is provided for people
with physical disabilities on the same basis as the service
for people with sight problems.
HEARING
LOSS
Videos
with subtitles -People with hearing difficulties may borrow
from a small collections of subtitled videos.
Closed
Caption videos - All branch and mobile libraries now stock
videos which carry subtitles (Closed Captions). In fact many
new feature films added to stock have this feature. The videos
are used with a decoder, connected between the TV and video
recorder, which reveals the subtitles normally hidden on video
cassette. The closed caption logo resembles a small TV screen
and is located on the cover of the video.
