Pupils out of School

Core Principles

  • To provide equal opportunity An individual’s difficulties and needs can vary over time and in different settings but this should not prevent complete access to the mainstream learning environment.
PRINCIPALS

  • To promote inclusion All pupils should have maximum access to the Northern Ireland curriculum and should be educated as far as possible with their mainstream peers.
  • To promote positive approaches to behaviour In all cases, positive approaches to behaviour should be implemented.
  • To work towards a consistent approach Schools and associated professionals should recognise the importance of having clearly stated and shared values and beliefs which underpin expected standards of behaviour.
  • To work in partnership with young people and their parents/carers The views of the young person and parents should be taken into account. Working with children who have SEBD should be done in partnership with parents/carers wherever possible.
  • To develop a multidisciplinary approach – The needs of young people with SEBD should be addressed primarily by school and parents working in partnership. Where there is significant complex need and necessity for other agency involvement there must be close co-operation and agreement in working practice. To develop early intervention practices.
