    Reconstitution of Boards of Governors
Child Protection Training for Governors is being organised by the SELB Designated Officers for Child Protection. Schools will be invited to these sessions and informed of the relevant times and venues for the training.

Could you be a School Governor?

The Board wishes to thank all those who are currently serving on one or more Boards of Governors for their commitment and dedication during the past 4 years. The role they have undertaken has been invaluable to Principals and Staff in managing their schools and providing a high quality of education for their pupils. Governors have provided support and encouragement through a time of significant change in our education system.

All types of people can become school governors and no specific qualifications are required. Qualities such as enthusiasm, commitment and an interest in education are some of the most important and each person will bring his/her own range of personal and life skills to the role.

The skills governors gain and develop in their working lives are invariably useful and relevant to the responsibilities undertaken as governors. Skills acquired working in business or the public sector will also be relevant to managing a school and members can use these skills as a member of the team constituting the Board of Governors.

    Membership of Boards of Governors

The membership of Boards of Governors differs according to the sector and whether the school is Primary, Post-Primary, Nursery, Special or Grammar but usually contains representatives of some of the following:-

    • Parent Governors (elected by parents)
    • Teacher Representatives (elected by the teachers in the school)
    • Transferor Representatives (Controlled Schools only - nominated by the main Protestant Churches and appointed by the Board)
    • SELB Representatives (appointed by the Board)
    • Trustee Representatives (Maintained schools only – nominated by the Trustees)
    • Department of Education Representatives (appointed by the Department to a range of schools)
